As you build rapport and relationships with your audience, email writing is easier for you, and your audience will buy from you. But what’s the best way to do that?

Liz Wilcox, an email marketer, gives us a behind-the-scenes look at how she navigated from a RV Blogger to building her email marketing business by using small talk to build connections with her audience.

Read on for key gems from her business story.

Connection building: Ask your clients what they want

Starting as a RV blogger, I understand the important of an email list. So day one of launching my blog, I started my email list. AFter a while, I created new products, resold old ones, and after getting to know my email list, I realized they needed an RV maintenance course. So, I asked the question – How many people would be interested if I created a RV maintenance course? 141 people clicked – Yes, I’d be interested.

Over the next 90 days, I hired someone to create the content, did all the pre launch stuff, and did a traditional Monday through Friday open/closed cart. And I made 141 sales.

Meeting people where they are

I started in this game without a lot of money and was never in group programs. I built my email list to help my audience. Most can’t afford the $5,000 that I was charging for a project. I thought about what I felt like in the beginning – not having internet on my phone & needing to go to the library. I decided that I really wanted to help people who are just getting started and don’t have a ton of money. And so that’s when I came up with email marketing membership. And that’s why I priced it at $9.

I’ve had 1,400 people become members in 14 months.

Leading with your vision will help you stop overthinking

Every marketer out there will tell you to tell stories. But chances are you didn’t get in business because you’re an excellent storyteller. You got in business because you want to help people. While stories are amazing, your newsletter is an email, not a novel, you don’t have to tell a story every single week. You just have to lead with a little bit of personality and your vision. That is what is driving the market.

People need to know where you’re going. If they don’t know where you’re going with them, they’re going to drop off. In your emails, you have constantly share the vision. One of my values is affordability inclusivity. that’s something that’s very obvious when you read my emails. And also I like to get to know if you get to know your people, they will help you make your emails.

Sales is about relationships

If you don’t have time to write a story, or if telling a story stresses you out, your people probably don’t have time to read it. Instead, you should share personal updates. This is two to three sentences about something that you did since the last time you emailed them. Always end with an invitation to hit reply, because that’s going to open up the conversation. That way when you do have a story to tell, they’re willing to read it because you’ve connected with them on a personal level without having to get too personal.

Sales is about relationships. How do you start a relationship? It’s almost always with small talk. You’ve got to have a little bit of small talk. Including small talk will help you become more comfortable writing emails.
